A University of Portsmouth student has been selected as a finalist for an international fashion competition.

Scarlett Gapp, a BA (Hons) Fashion and Textile Design student, was named as one of three finalists to be shortlisted for the Lotto Sport Award in the International Talent Support (ITS) competition, which celebrates and promotes emerging designers. Scarlett is one of 36 finalists for the ITS 2020 competition, with three for the Lotto Sport Award, after more than 600 portfolios were received, and digital meetings conducted by a judging panel.

Scarlett said:  “I loved the idea of creating an entirely up-cycled collection knowing sustainability is such a major issue in the world of fashion. I found an interest in the unique shapes and nostalgia feeling old sportsman players and their vintage sports kits and equipment. I developed my 3 piece collection based on their unique materials and interesting shapes and entered for the ITS competition after being introduced and encouraged by my teachers.

“Upon finding out I was one of three finalists for such a big competition, I couldn't quite believe it. I have now already begun designing my outfits for Lotto including a corresponding pair of Lotto trainers that will be made as a one-off to go with my look. Being a finalist is a thrilling opportunity for me which will hopefully open more doors and I'm excited to be a part of this, as my first experience into the industry.”

Rachel Homewood, BA (Hons) Fashion and Textile Design course leader, said: “The Fashion and Textiles course team are extremely proud of Scarlett's achievement in becoming a finalist for the ITS Lotto Sport Award. Out of 18,000 applications, Scarlett is one of 600 finalists to have been selected.

“Scarlett has worked extremely hard throughout her three years of studying on our BA (Hons) Fashion and Textile course. Through the development of re-purposing unusual problematic materials, she has created a final collection that is full of originality and is very playful!”

The ITS 2020 Finalists will be joining the ITS Family for the Finals on 23 October 2020 where Scarlett will create an outfit inspired by Lotto's heritage and the world of tennis.
