The Motion Capture Studio is based in Eldon Building and has been running for more than a decade. It has recently undergone an immense upgrade as part of the new Centre for Creative and Immersive Extended Reality (CCIXR), which opened on 4 May 2022.
The studio uses a variety of motion capture systems to deliver a professional experience to our students and staff, as well as filmmakers and commercial clients from outside the University.
Equipment
The studio has everything required for virtual production and virtual reality in visual effects (VFX), gaming, and the arts.
Motion capture systems
We have multiple motion capture systems:
- Optical passive Shogun system, consisting of 48x Vicon Vantage cameras for capturing high-fidelity animation
- 40-camera Vicon Origin active system – for quick setup and streaming of animation into location-based virtual reality experiences and training simulations
- Assorted inertial motion capture wearables, including XSens suits and StretchSense gloves
Performance capture
We also have full performance capture capabilities with:
- A set of 4 Dynamixyz facial capture head-mounted cameras
- High-quality wireless Sennheiser microphones
- Acoustic dampening walls, for optimal audio recording
Our capture volume is approximately 90 square metres and has a height of five metres.
The studio is equipped with four video reference cameras, five large preview monitors, and a gallery desk with five powerful dual monitors.
We have a large selection of mocap suits available and specially adapted shoes for our actors to wear in a range of sizes.
What we offer
A key role of our studio is providing industry relevant experience to our students while they study – and our alumni have since gone on to work around the world in the motion capture industry, for companies such as Rockstar Games, Vicon, the Imaginarium Studios and Weta Digital.
The services we offer are free to any student or member of staff within the University, but we also welcome enquiries from outside of the University.
To start discussing what you need and when, contact us or book now.
